Abrasives are hard materials used to give shapes and a finished look to workpieces. Abrasives can be used to provide figures to industrial, domestic, and technological appliances.

They are rubbed against the pieces to give them a final look like the part of the piece that is being rubbed with the abrasive wear apart. Further, we are going to learn about different types of abrasives.

Natural abrasives

Natural abrasives occur naturally from nature. However, mining and processing natural abrasives can make them usable with a slight alteration. Some of the natural abrasives include corundum, diamond, etc.

Natural abrasives are often hard in nature as they occur directly from the earth’s crust and are used to give shape to other materials by grinding.

They often make a final product as dressed stones because of the grinding. Once the natural abrasive is extracted from the crust, it is then processed and converted into abrasive tools after manufacturing.

Synthetic abrasives

Synthetic abrasives are the contrary of natural abrasives. They are designed to emulate the organic abrasive. They do not occur naturally from the earth’s crust but are made by people.

Synthetic abrasives are made after the processing of raw materials or chemicals. Some of the synthetic abrasives are synthetic diamond, silicon, carbide, alumina, etc.

Synthetic abrasives are identical to natural abrasives. The only difference is that they are manufactured instead of being mined.

Paper backings

Paper backings are used for hand sanding and handling electrical sanding. Paper backings can be measured in different weights.

These weights can be measured in 6 alphabets. They are A, B, C, D, E, and F in a respective manner. A and B are considered the lightest weighted papers. These are used for light and medium class grains.

In A and B, B is slightly thicker than A paper. It is also more valuable than A. C and D paper backings are of average weight. E and F are solid and are durable.

For converting the metal into shapes like discs, belts, etc., E and F paper backings are used.

Cloth backings

Cloth backings include polyester, cotton, etc. These cloth backings have high density and are stiff in nature. Different weights can know the stiffness and density of the backings; these weights are generally in the form of alphabets, j, m, s, t, x, y, z.

In these alphabets, the J is known to have the thinnest weight. While X weight is considered as the average weight, and the Y weight is known to be the heaviest of all.
